Setting Sail
Today’s widespread access to high-quality learning materials and open-source technologies have turned Data Science, Machine Learning, and Artificial Intelligence from esoteric disciplines mastered by a handful of specialists into democratized and ever-growing bodies of knowledge and tools. Yet, for the majority of individuals and organizations, extracting value from data is still all but smooth sailing.
For most organizations, creating and running a Data Science team is a large undertaking. Often, these teams are created before the right questions are asked or before measurable goals are set. The impact of Data Science then becomes hard to quantify and tensions accumulate between internal stakeholders - who want to see results now - and Data Science teams - which are not properly integrated and struggle to deliver. Even organizations that have successfully created and integrated Data Science teams still must overcome a multitude of challenges associated with managing and mining real-world data.
Any organization that successfully leverages Data Science today has not become successful without its fair share of false starts, failures, learnings, adjustments, and perseverance. In fact, it almost seems that organizations must inevitably go through the process of making a certain series of mistakes before Data Science can even start to deliver on its promise.
But is it really necessary to make these mistakes and bear the associated risks? Is there a way to accelerate the journey towards making Data Science impactful?
Over the course of 15 years spent working across multiple industries and academia, we have had multiple opportunities to craft and influence the strategies of several data-centric organizations, guide the implementation of these strategies, and observe what works and what does not work. Along the way, we learned from our successes and even more from our failures.
Today, we feel strongly that making our experiences and our know-how available to others who choose to embark in their own data journey can help them make better decisions from the get-go, avoid common pitfalls, and accelerate and enhance their Data Science projects.
This is why we created Data Captains.
Data Captains is a boutique consulting firm that partners with organizations that are committed to using data to improve their business and to build products and services for their customers. We advise others about the opportunities that Data Science, Machine Learning, and Artificial Intelligence unlock when leveraged in a pragmatic, effective and business-oriented way.
From startups and smaller companies that are at the beginning of their data journey to larger companies that already embraced data-driven decision making, we help our clients develop their data strategy, select appropriate tools, frameworks, and platforms. We also partner with them to launch and complete internal analyses, attract and hire hands-on specialists and leaders, and develop their data culture.
More experienced teams partner with us to validate and perfect their analytics techniques, to enhance their ability to run experiments and A/B tests, and to develop and productionize Machine Learning services to power and enhance their products.
Additionally, we partner with academic and business institutions to develop learning materials and deliver customized courses, lectures, and workshops.
We could not be more excited about this launch, and we look forward to setting sail for the many data adventures ahead. Whatever the next destination in your data journey might be, you can count on our help to get there!
